The Acceleration Academies are week-long academic programs designed to provide targeted small group support for students at schools in Lawrence, Massachusetts during February and April vacation breaks. Acceleration Academy classes are taught by excellent teachers from across the nation and focus on English language arts, math, and science.
Each Acceleration Academy provides approximately 25-30 additional hours of instruction in one subject area (roughly equivalent to an additional month of schooling). This extended learning time provides targeted, data-driven support to help students in class and prepare them for the end-of-year exam.
Acceleration Academy teachers are recipients of the LPS Sontag Prize in Urban Education, which recognizes outstanding teachers from across the country. Sontag Prize recipients receive an honorarium and participate in two days of professional development at Harvard University prior to the Acceleration Academy weeks.
This is Hestia’s fourth year funding the Lawrence Public Schools. Hestia’s grant of $30,000 will support the Acceleration Academies Program.
